Both are licensed the same way in California, but homes that offer memory care must meet extra state requirements for dementia care, including staff dementia training and a plan for residents’ safety, and usually have secured doors and outdoor space — standard assisted living does not require any of that by default.

A small care home (often called "board and care") is a regular house licensed for up to six residents, so there's usually more one-on-one attention and a family feel. Large communities have more residents, more amenities and activities, and often more independence, but less individual attention. Neither is right for everyone — I run small homes myself, and I'll help you figure out which fits your loved one.
