Respite stays are short-term — anywhere from a few days to a few weeks — and exist for two reasons: giving a family caregiver a genuine break, or letting a family "test drive" a community before committing to a permanent move.
Availability moves fast since most respite rooms are also long-term rooms between residents. I track which Temecula, Murrieta, and Menifee communities currently have short-term openings so you're not starting from zero.
When respite care makes sense
- The family caregiver needs a break. Caring for a parent around the clock is exhausting. A week or two of respite lets you rest, travel, or deal with your own health without worrying.
- After a hospital or rehab stay. If your loved one isn’t quite ready to go home, a short stay gives them 24-hour help while they get stronger.
- A family emergency. When the caregiver gets sick or has to leave town suddenly.
- A trial run. Your loved one gets to experience daily life in a home before anyone commits to a permanent move.
What’s included in a respite stay
A respite resident usually gets the same care as everyone else in the home: a furnished room, meals and snacks, help with bathing and dressing, medication management, and caregivers there day and night. Your loved one can join activities and meals with the other residents, which many seniors enjoy more than they expect.
Respite in a small care home or a larger community?
Both can work. A larger community may have a dedicated respite apartment and a busy activity calendar, which suits a social parent. A small licensed care home has only a handful of residents and the same caregivers every shift, which often helps a parent who is anxious, has memory loss, or is recovering from a hospital stay. I’ll suggest whichever setting fits your loved one, and if a home is one of mine, I’ll tell you upfront.
What respite care costs
Respite is usually priced by the day or by the week rather than the month, and the daily rate is often a bit higher than what long-term residents pay. Ask for the total cost of the stay up front, including any one-time fees. Medicare doesn’t cover respite in assisted living, with one exception: if your loved one is on hospice, the Medicare hospice benefit can cover a short respite stay to give the family caregiver a break. Long-term care insurance sometimes helps too, so check the policy.
How to get ready for a respite stay
- Start the paperwork early. Licensed homes in California need a recent doctor’s report and a TB test before move-in, even for short stays. These take the longest, so request them right away.
- Bring a full medication list and at least a week of medications in their original pharmacy bottles.
- Pack familiar things: a favorite blanket, photos, and comfortable clothes labeled with their name.
- Write a short “about me” page with routines, preferences, and what helps when they get anxious.
